OUR UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY
Finno Exergy’s innovation is based on using pulsed deflagration combustion compatible with existing technology, which has yielded significant results. The technology team have successfully harnessed concepts prevalent in ICE combustion and applied them to gas turbines. Effectively the technology is able to harness 80% of the benefits without any of the drawbacks associated with pulse detonation.
Finno Exergy was established in 2012. We spotted an opportunity for a technology to enable power generation with the electrical efficiency of Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) along with the reliability, the availability, the ability to use several different fuels, and the reduced emissions of gas turbines.
PRESSURE GAIN
COMBUSTION
TECHNOLOGY
The Finno Exergy pressure gain combustion (PGC) process is available for gas turbines in all application areas. Using accurate flow and combustion control, pressure gain of more than 25% has been verified by measurement in our test unit. The simulation driven product development process of pressure gain combustion system is done within the Finno Exergy integrated virtual development environment.
SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY OUT OF A CLEANTECH SOLUTION
The Finno Exergy PGC system is capable of complete burning with low emissions. It can handle a variety of conventional as well as renewable fuels, including alcohol fuels with water content. Freedom of fuel choice as well as high efficiency contribute to an environmentally smart solution. An important part of the development and validation process is a gas generator test unit that has been running
since 2015.
INTEGRATED VIRTUAL DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT
Cutting edge 3D-CFD flow and combustion simulation is integrated to full system simulation and optimization by 1D software, used in conjunction with laboratory testing to calibrate models and verify test results. Avant-garde application of powerful engineering tools enabled the technology team to create the most impressive results within a short timeline. Technology team is available to joint development projects
with clients.

ETN Webinar on “Finno Exergy’s PGC Technology: a novel solution for efficiency improvement and fuel flexibility in gas turbines”
December 2023
ETN Global is glad to invite you at its new webinar entitled Finno Exergy’s PGC Technology: A Novel Solution for Efficiency Improvement and Fuel Flexibility in Gas Turbines. The event will take place on Friday, 15 December from 10.00 to 11.00 (CET).
The virtual event is jointly organized with ETN MemberFinno Exergy. Since 2015, Finno Exergy has been developing a novel pressure gain combustion system for gas turbines applications. The technology has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and enable the retrofitted gas turbine to operate with any mixture of hydrogen and methane. In this webinar, Fabio Ciccateri (Chief Technology Officer, Finno Exergy) will describe Finno Exergy’s technology basic principles, the potential reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the technology development up to date and next steps towards a commercial implementation of the combustion system.
Registrations & attendance
Registrations to this event are free, but mandatory. To register, please follow the link here. We are looking forward to seeing you online!
Positive publicity in the Tekniikka & Talous-magazine
November 2023
Finno Exergy has received positive publicity in the Tekniikka & Talous-magazine. The excellent results of the combustion chamber tests have been noted in a Finnish technology magazine. We continue to scale the technology to the commercial version and have started selling to gas turbine manufacturers to deliver the first PGC combustion chambers in the next few years. Our cooperation with Shell continues and we have signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding to continue our journey in reducing CO2 emissions.
Finno Exergy advancing its innovative gas turbines technology with the help of Shell GameChanger
September 2023
Company aims to help decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and contribute to development of hydrogen economy by making technology available to the global market.
Finnish company Finno Energy is aiming to take another step forward in commercializing its gas turbines technology after proving its functionality through a successful testing phase which concluded this spring.
With the help of Shell Gamechanger, Finno Exergy's team has validated their proof of concept and will now advance its research & development work toward commercial utilization.
"Finno Exergy has developed a solution that has shown potential to cut gas turbines’ CO2 emissions by up to 20%. In addition, our pressure gain combustion system works with any mixture of natural gas and hydrogen. This feature has potential to enable the direct utilization of hydrogen in the sectors where emissions are hard to abate, like heat and power generation in industrial applications, and dispatchable electricity generation.
For end users, like a manufacturing plant, our solution could deliver substantial cost savings and emissions reduction by improving the efficiency of energy production," says Mr. Timo Erämaa, Founder and CEO of Finno Exergy.
The essence of the innovation is a more efficient combustion system for gas turbines applications. Gas turbines are widely applied across many sectors and industries.
As the innovation is fuel-agnostic, meaning it can use any type of fuel, including hydrogen, it has potential to accelerate the transition to lower-carbon options like lower carbon hydrogen.
"We have been developing and piloting our solution in cooperation with Shell GameChanger since we won the New Energy Challenge competition in 2020 and our unique innovation is now protected by 10 patent families in Europe, the United States, China and Japan, ” says Mr. Fabio Ciccateri, Chief Technology Officer at Finno Exergy.
Finno Exergy's goal is to start the first customer projects at the end of 2023 and to achieve a turnover of more than EUR 130 million through license sales in 2027. Commercial negotiations with potential customers, including gas turbine manufacturers worldwide, are already underway. Finno Exergy is starting a new project, in collaboration with academic and industrial partners, focused on the design and test of a retrofitting package for a selected industrial gas turbine, to be used as a technology demonstrator. Shell GameChanger will continue to monitor Finno Exergy’s technology development for awareness about the progression and maturation of this technology.
